Recognising obstructive sleep apnoea as a sign of developing diabetes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Article points 1. An increasing body of evidence suggests that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is independently associated with glucose intolerance and worsened glycaemic control. Also, OSA is a common comorbidity in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), with a higher prevalence than in the general population. 2. The two primary disturbances in OSA, acute periods of hypoxic stress and sleep fragmentation, have been shown to potentially impair glucose homeostasis. OSA, obesity and impaired glucose metabolism create a vicious triangle leading to further weight gain, progression of OSA and deteriorating glucose homeostasis, which can result in T2D. 3. Given the complex bidirectional relationship between OSA and T2D, people with one condition should be considered for the other.

Abnormalities in the flow-volume loop in obstructive sleep apnoea sitting and supine.
We evaluated the effect of posture on the sensitivity and specificity of abnormalities in the flow-volume loop in 30 patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea. Flow-volume loops were judged as abnormal if the FEF50/FIF50 ratio was greater than 1 or if the sawtooth sign was judged to be present by at least two of three chest physicians. Detailed nocturnal recordings confirmed the presence...
متن کاملDiabetes mellitus and obstructive sleep apnoea: implications for clinicians
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major public health problem globally. Current estimates suggest a significant increase in the global burden of DM in the years to come. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is an emerging health concern world over. Evidence is available suggesting that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is considered to be both the cause and consequence of DM. Due to lack of awareness regard...
متن کاملSleep and breathing disorders: a multidisciplinary approach.
Sleep-related respiratory disorders are highly prevalent, and represent a growing subspecialty of respiratory medicine. Sleep apnoea is nearly as prevalent in the general population as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [1, 2], and the comprehensive management of the disorder requires special knowledge and expertise. Since sleep apnoea also represents the most common organic cause of excessi...
متن کاملObstructive sleep apnoea: definitions, epidemiology & natural history.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is increasingly being recognized as an important health issue in the last two to three decades. It is characterized by frequent episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep, causing recurrent arousals, intermittent hypoxaemia, sleep fragmentation and poor sleep quality. There is accumulating evidence that OSA is being considered as an independent risk factor for...
متن کاملCardiovascular complications of psoriasis: does obstructive sleep apnoea play a role?
Sir, There are considerable data to suggest that patients with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing diabetes, obesity, heart insu¤ciency and occlusive vascular disease than non-psoriatic dermatological patients (1 ^ 3). It has been hypothesized that clot formation following abnormal arachidonic acid and cyclic nucleotide metabolism or blood hyperviscosity in psoriasis might be responsibl...
